Keywords: interpretative theory, hypertext, reading/writing Does the electronic text lead us to think, interpret, or read in new ways? Does the meaning we find in an electronic text differ in any way from the meaning of printed texts? Is the electronic text a new theoretical object, or is it simply made of same basic stuff as printed text, but wrapped in a flashier package? Can traditional approaches to text analysis and interpretation be applied with minor adjustment to electronic texts or are radically new theories needed?
This session will focus on what might make the electronic text a new objet of study for interpretative semantics. We will investigate how traditional theoretical approaches can be adapted, or not, to the electronic medium, and how the development of theory is being shaped, or not, by the new medium.

The new medium is characterized by a plethora of new techniques, but it is uncertain that such techniques will lead to any fundamental revision of our theoretical presuppositions about the nature of text. In other words, while it is clear that the electronic medium offers novel ways to look at textual data, one could argue that those techniques do not lead, even collectively, to any profoundly new understanding of texts or their meaning. In this session we will address the question: Is the electronic text theoretically neutral, open to any and all theories of text, or does it contain a bias and the germ of a new theoretical orientation?

Le texte électronique nous amène-t-il à penser, à interpréter ou à lire autrement? Le sens qu'on trouve dans le texte électronique se distingue-t-il du sens des textes imprimés? Le texte électronique est-il un nouvel objet théorique, ou est-il formé de la même matière première que le texte imprimé, et simplement enveloppé dans un emballage plus attrayant? Les approches traditionnelles de l'analyse textuelle s'appliquent-elles aux textes électroniques sans grand changement ou est-ce qu'on a besoin de nouvelles théories?

Cette séance sera centrée sur ce qui semble faire du texte électronique un nouvel objet d'étude pour la sémantique interprétative. Nous étudierons la façon dont les approches théoriques traditionnelles peuvent être adaptées au médium électronique, et que le développement des théories se laisse actuellement influencé par le support électronique, ainsi que les échecs inévitables dans ce domaine.

Le médium électronique se caractérise par une multitude de nouvelles techniques, mais il n'est pas certain que celles-ci nous amèneront à réviser nos présuppositions sur la nature du texte. Autrement dit, alors qu'il est évident que le médium électronique offre de nouvelles façons de voir les données textuelles, on pourrait soutenir que ces techniques, quel que soient leur nombre, ne nous amènent pas à une nouvelle compréhension approfondie des textes ou de leur sens. La question que nous traiterons dans cette séance est: Le texte électronique occupe-t-il un champ qui est neutre et ouvert à n'importe quelle approche à la théorie des textes, ou contient-il une orientation théorique implicite et la germe d'une nouvelle théorie du texte?
